YOU MAY BE WONDERING WHAT IS A DOULA EXACTLY, OR WHAT DOES SHE ACTUALLY DO FOR ME DURING MY BIRTH?
Summed up in a few short phrases..
A Birth Doula recognizes birth as a transformative experience the mother will remember all her life. She understands the physiological and emotional needs of a woman during labor as well as how to best support communication between her partner and clinical care providers.
A Birth Doula will provide informational support, emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective, informed, viewpoint to help the laboring woman make informed decisions regarding her birth experience. She will stay with the laboring mom throughout labor to nurture and protect the hopes for her birth experience, as well as fully allow the partner to participate supporting the mother at their level of comfort.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE DOULA AND THE MEDICAL STAFF?
While it is the role of the doula to understand the physiological as well as emotional sensations that encompass birth, the doula does not perform clinical tasks. Her role as the doula is to provide emotional support, especially coaching and encouragement during birth. The doula also is focused on providing comfort measures for the laboring mom and her partner as well, as his sustained strength is just as important to the labor! She may suggest labor positions to use in different environments as well as implement massage or use of pressure points to relieve pain sensation. The role of the doula is to provide informational support the the parents to help them arrive at an informed decision to the various steps of labor along the way. She will never speak for the parents, but her goal is to facilitate clear and healthy communication between the healthcare team.
IF MY PARTNER IS COMFORTABLE HELPING ME THROUGH LABOR WHY WOULD I STILL NEED A DOULA?
The old saying “teamwork makes the dream work” is completely applicable (and still cheesy) here. While the doula provides birth experience and education during times when it is extremely difficult to recall everything learned in Childbirth class for parents, she cannot replace the emotional connection and intimate relationship formed over time. A loving partner usually just wants to help mom in whatever ways she may need, but sometimes needs a little guidance or refresher on how to do so in the moment. Together the doula and mom’s partner make the perfect team to support her through the birth of their new baby.
DOES THE EVIDENCE SUPPORT BETTER OUTCOMES FOR WOMEN WHO USED A DOULA DURING THEIR BIRTH?
According to an article published in the Cochrane Review “continuous support in labor increased the chance of a spontaneous vaginal birth, had no harm, and women were more satisfied.” (Hodnett, Gates, Hofmeyr & Sakala, July 2013)
This means the women in this study who had continuous labor support were more likely to give birth WITHOUT a cesarean or vacuum or forceps. In addition, women were less likely to use pain medication, had shorter labors overall and were more satisfied with their birth experience. Need I say more?
This is your baby’s birth day, and a transformative experience you and your partner want to remember positively for the rest of your lives. A doula can be a small investment that will set your and your newborn up for a big future.
WHAT IF I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH JMCKC BIRTH DOULA SERVICES?
Failure to Provide Services
In the event that neither the doula or her back-up doula attend the birth for unforeseen emergency circumstances all fees minus the retainer fee will be refunded to the family.
If failure to attend the birth by the doula is due to an error on part of the parents (failing to call the doula upon onset of labor, for example) no refund will be given.
Refunds do not include extenuating circumstances such as premature labor, an unplanned cesarean, use of pain medication or any circumstance in which the birth does not go according to the parent’s birth plan by elect of the provider and mother’s consent.
WHAT DO YOU FEEL LIKE MAKES YOU A GREAT DOULA?
I am young, energetic and passionate about being with women and their partners during birth. My schedule is flexible and my priority is to support the woman and her new family. I am tender hearted, fun-loving, and a positive, upbeat person. I sincerely want the best for every mom’s birth, and recognize that may look different for each individual woman. If you desire these qualities in your doula..let’s chat!
Also, as a Christ follower I believe in the power of prayer and would love to pray with you and your family at any time you feel comfortable before or during your birth experience. It is never an obligation, but is comforting to know that option is there for those who would draw strength from joining hands.
